Twenty One Days Of Healthy Skin: Sleep (Day 9)
Sleep - The term beauty sleep is not, in fact, a fallacy
Your skin heals, absorbs and increases in function while you sleep. And adding some super serums to your nightly routine will feed your skin at night while you sleep. 7-10 hours is what you need, even if you are not doing much during the day. Stay in a good sleep routine.
The term beauty sleep is not, in fact, a fallacy. You could use the best products, skincare routines and even have the best make-up but your skin will eventually confess your little sleep and rest.
In 2017, a clinical trial was implemented with objective of how sleep can impact your skin’s appearance, with a secondary objective of asking other people to to share their impression too. The one sample was tasked to a healthy night’s sleep and the other group, unfortunately, was asked to have some poor sleep. Photographs were taken and in all cases, the persons rating the pictures said that they would probably be less inclined to socialise or make contact with the sleep-deprived persons than with those people that had enough sleep. They looked sluggish, less attractive and even ill in some cases. This research proved that looking tired is not at all attractive and your skin looks unhealthy.
What happens with your skin while you are sleeping?
Skin cell division increases. The skin regenerates itself more during the night than in the day.
Skin cells become more receptive to ingredients. This is one of the reasons why you should wash your face and apply a product that contains nourishing and skin cell changing ingredients
There is an increase in water loss during the night. This is why it is important to use a well-formulated night cream. (drinking alcohol increases the dehydration from the inside making late nights drinking a very bad choice for your skin)
Improved nourishment is provided to the skin as the internal organs need less nutrition to function in resting periods
As your internal organs need less blood flow, the blood flows to your skin improves.
Research says you need 7-10 hours of sleep every night. This needs to be in a quiet, dark and comfortable environment.
You need to have your brain 'turned off' and relaxed, in order for your body to go into full rest and REM sleep. Sleeping with light or noise will mean that you never reach the deep REM sleep that your body and skin needs to rest and regenerate.
