Acne treatments of the past traditionally comprised either antibiotics or, later, oxides or oxygen-based products. But did you know that there’s scientific evidence to show that these treatments can actually make your breakouts worse?
Numerous studies, from as early as 2003 all the way to today, have shown that the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes for short), one of the main recognised causes of acne, pimples and breakouts in the skin, is becoming more and more drug resistant. Using antibiotics to treat P.acnes is just fanning the flames of this global scourge.
Oxygen-based products, such as benzoyl peroxide, on the other hand, work by creating reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the skin, which seems to get around the drug-resistance problem (because it’s not an antibiotic) but damages the skin in other ways. Noted as early as 1968 and reinforced again by studies in 2010 and today, ROS makes skin more comedogenic (likely to have pimples).
So, what gives?
Well, we can’t speak for the rest of the skincare industry but at Lamelle Research Laboratories, we won’t stand for promoting and using treatments that don’t do what they promise. Let alone ones that can actually make the condition worse. That’s why we’ve developed two entirely new problematic skin treatment products that use neither antibiotics nor oxygen to clear up to 86% of pimples in 8–12 weeks as part of our Lamelle Clarity range.
Here’s what you need to know about clearing acne safely and effectively today.
A PROBLEM WAY TOO BIG TO IGNORE
Acne vulgaris affects around 85% of all people. And it’s not just teenagers. Many people continue to suffer from acne and pimples throughout various stages of their lives.
It’s caused by a few things: hyperkeratinisation is a disorder in the cells that line hair follicles, and this is exacerbated by the skin over-producing normal oils known as sebum (hyperseborrhea) and the presence of the bacterium P.acnes. Acne is often the result of an infection, which is why pimples are red, sore and inflamed.
And, for many years, the go-to treatment was to blast the P.acnes with antibiotics. But that’s where a big part of the problem with treating acne today lies.
ANTIBIOTICS ARE CREATING DRUG-RESISTANT ACNE BACTERIA
The wide usage of oral and especially topical antibiotics to treat P.acnes has contributed to creating highly drug-resistant bacteria. In some cases, P.acnes’ drug resistance has been documented to be as high as 40%.
In a nutshell that means that P.acnes is so resistant to antibiotics today that treatments are failing. And the widespread use of antibiotics means that its drug resistance continues to grow.
So, naturally, the skincare industry has been looking at alternative ways to treat acne. And one of the most popular routes by far is to use oxygen-based ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide, which isn’t an antibiotic but delivers a similar antimicrobial effect. The problem with oxygen is that it’s actually very damaging to your skin and tissue in other ways.
WHY OXYGEN-BASED PRODUCTS ARE MAKING THINGS WORSE
Apart from basically being free radicals (which cause pretty bad DNA damage and contribute to ageing in the skin), the problem with the ROS that oxygen-based products employ to treat acne, is that it actually makes your skin more likely to form new pimples. Talk about your catch-22, right?
See, acne sufferers contain more specifically “charged” lipids in the outer layer of their skin, known as squalene. And, in this state, squalene is a very effective ROS scavenger (it neutralises oxygen radicals, almost like an antioxidant). But, if you apply an oxygen-based product to your skin, the ROS oxidises these lipids into squalene oxides. And it’s this squalene oxide that makes skin more comedogenic – likely to form new pimples, also called comedones.
In short, you need alternative treatments that are neither antibiotic nor produce oxidation in the skin.
NEW SOLUTIONS THAT ACTUALLY WORK
Lamelle Research Laboratories has recently introduced two new products that deliver a remarkable 60–86% reduction in pimples without antibiotics or ROS in 8–12 weeks.
Lamelle Clarity Active Control is an emergency spot treatment that calms inflammation in pimples (to help reduce scarring) while reducing P.acnes using Niacinamide and a very specific retinoid that’s proven to deliver the same results as prescription-strength antibiotics, but without adding the drug resistance or producing ROS. It comes in a handy 9ml tube (so you can take it anywhere), it specifically made to be used on the face and is part of Lamelle’s Clarity range.
It’s designed to help eliminate pimples and the stress and anxiety that goes along with experiencing a pimple emergency.
Lamelle Clarity Active Body Spray is made with the same powerful next-gen ingredients, but specifically designed to be used on the neck, back, chest and shoulders. It comes in a handy spray, making it easy to apply twice a day for more effective acne treatment without causing ROS or adding to the problem of bacterial resistance.
If you are looking for a safer and more effective means of combating acne, pimples and breakouts, speak to your doctor or skincare therapist about starting a safe and effective home-treatment programme with Lamelle Clarity Active Control.
